The Lesser-Known Greek Island That’s Perfect For Adventure Travellers

Though Milos might not be as famous as Santorini or Mykonos, its stunning landscapes and pristine beaches make it an unforgettable island destination.

I’d say it’s the perfect Greek island for the more adventurous traveller.

Here’s a glimpse into why Milos deserves a spot on your bucket list:

Milos

This island is a dream come true for adventure enthusiasts—ideal for swimming, snorkelling, and coastal hiking.

From the lunar-like terrain of Sarakiniko to the crystal-clear waters of Firiplaka, you’ll find yourself drawn to the sea. Milos offers not only breathtaking beaches but also a genuine look at local culture.

Since the island is quite spread out, getting around by ATV or quad bike is the most efficient way to explore. While Milos is focused mainly on its beaches, this only adds to its peaceful charm, providing a serene escape from the busier islands.

For a taste of luxury, you’ll find a selection of incredible villas and hotels at prices much lower than those in Santorini or Mykonos.

Things to Do on Milos

Milos, Greece

Compared to Santorini or Mykonos, Milos is far quieter.

You can explore the vibrant blue waters on a chartered boat or catamaran tour—the water is stunning! Or you can soak up the sun on the beaches.

Beyond the coast, the island’s interior has plenty to explore, and visit the charming town of Plaka for its sweeping panoramic views.

Explore Traditional Fishing Villages

Pollonia, a lovely resort town, is nestled along the coast, offering picturesque views of the Aegean Sea and charming whitewashed buildings.

Firopotamos, located on the northwest side of the island, is another quaint fishing village worth visiting. Wander through the traditional homes, known as syrmata, before heading to the beach for swimming, snorkelling, or simply relaxing. Don’t forget to visit the Church of Agios Nikolaos to admire its stunning architecture.

Charter a Private Sailboat

To fully appreciate Milos’ beauty, consider sailing through the Cyclades. You’ll see some of the clearest, sparkling waters you’ve ever seen.

In Milos, life is centred around the sea, and there are plenty of sailing options. Choose a group tour with a set itinerary, or go for a private charter with a skipper who can take you on a day or overnight adventure.

Most excursions include snorkelling gear, snacks, drinks, and occasionally an underwater camera.

Discover the Stunning Beaches

One of Milos’ standout features is the variety of beaches.

You can visit traditional fishing villages one day and explore hidden coves by abseiling cliffs the next.

Whether you’re looking for family-friendly beaches, rocky caves, or ideal spots for kayaking, Milos has it all.

Spend Time in Plaka

Plaka, the island’s largest town, sits high on a cliff overlooking the gulf of Milos.

With narrow, winding streets, most areas are inaccessible by car, so be prepared to park and walk uphill. Though the climb can be steep, the views are worth it!

It can get very hot during midday, so consider visiting in the early morning for breakfast or later in the afternoon to avoid the heat. The castle in Plaka is a fantastic spot to watch the sunset.

Rent an ATV

If you have an international driving licence, renting an ATV or other vehicle in Greece is simple, and it’s a great way to get around the island.

I’d recommend reserving your rental before you arrive, at least 48 hours in advance, to avoid extra fees or limited availability, especially during the peak season.

Before booking, check with your accommodation to see if they offer any rental deals.

Just keep in mind that if you’re renting a scooter or ATV, a motorcycle licence is required.
